Janice Anthen (Hurt) Wallace, 93, of Wheaton, IL, born Nov 7, 1919, in Greenup, IL to Charles 'Tell' and Pearl Wood Hurt, passed away Jul 22, 2013, in Glen Ellyn, IL.

Janice grew up on farms in Clark and Cumberland Counties. She took the six-part Illinois Teacher Certification test at age 17, leading to her first position in a rural one-room school in 1937. After teaching for five years, Janice enlisted in the WAVES during WWII, entering service in 1943. She became a Link Navigation trainer, eventually serving at the Kaneohe Bay Air Base on Oahu in Hawaii where she was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Sp(T)1c. A brief post-war marriage to Marine pilot Charles M Wallace produced son Jonathon. Janice continued as a civilian Link trainer in Hawaii until the base was closed in 1949 and she and Jon returned to her parents' farm outside Martinsville, IL. She was recalled to the Civil Service during the Korean War, working in the Washington D.C. area. She returned to Illinois and renewed her teaching career in the Chicago suburbs, settling in Burbank. Janice completed her college coursework at Indiana State in Terre Haute, earning her B.S. in Education in 1960. She went on to receive a Masters degree from Chicago State in 1969. She retired from teaching in 1979. In 1990 Janice returned to her roots, buying a house in Casey to share her retirement years with her siblings. Three years ago, she traded her downstate home for a Wheaton apartment within a few miles of her son.

Janice is survived by son Jon and wife Pat of Glen Ellyn; grandson Matt and wife Holly of Round Rock, TX; granddaughter Kathleen of Seattle, WA; great granddaughter Payton and great grandson Dylan; brother Phillip (the late Imogene) Hurt of Houston, TX; and nieces and nephews Loistel (the late Dave) Summerville, Sandra (Jim) Stumborg, Tony Delp, Charlotte (Tom) Royal, Chris (Becky) Hurt, Ednabelle (Dick) Shelby, and Patsy Allyson (Donald Verplancken) Hurt.
